NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS) Back
College has one unit of NSS which enrolls 100 volunteers every year. The activities like Blood Donation Camp, Special Residential Camp, Tree plantation, Health Camps and awareness drive on various social and economical issues are conducted every year. Special projects for senior citizens, Energy conservation and recycle of waste material are taken up. Volunteers actively participate in various university level activities and also in camps at state and national level. Volunteers are given extra credit points for successfully completing 120 hours of social service every year.
NATIONAL CADET CORPS
Our students are encouraged to participate in University and state level rifle shooting competitions. The cadets are trained at Andheri. The college provides an opportunity for students to join the N.C.C.
NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME Report 2021-22 National Service Scheme Unit of college enables volunteers to understand and act on the concepts like Community Mobilization, Social Justice, and Service to the Nation, etc. A total of 100 volunteers were enrolled in the current academic year. Owing to the Covid-19 Pandemic a lot of activities were conducted on the online platform, especially during the first half of the academic year. The NSS Unit has been especially cautious in following government guidelines in fulfilling its current dual aims of performing social service and keeping its volunteers safe.

Blood Donation Camp 15th February 2020 A blood donation camp was organized by NSS unit of the college on 15th February, 2020. J J Mahanagar Blood Bank was involved in the process of blood collection. In all 107 units of blood was collected during the camp. Many NSS volunteers along with students from various sections of college and staff members enthusiastically participated in the event by donating blood themselves and by motivating others to donate the blood. |

NSS special residential camp January 2020 The Special Residential Camp was held at Belkhadi Village, Kaman Taluka, Palghar district from 4th January – 10th January 2020. A total of 58 volunteers and 2 staff members participated in the camp. Various activities like Vermicompost pit recharging, Cleanliness of local stream, Street Play on Swacchhata, Zilla Parishad school painting and beautification were conducted. The camp was visited by Shri. Sushil Shinde, District Coordinator, Western Region, University of Mumbai who guided the students regarding NSS activities and importance of ‘Volunteering’ in life. Overall the camp was a huge success for all the participants. |

Bhajan Sandhya 2nd October, 2019 The NSS Volunteers participated in University Level Activity of Bhajan Sandhya at Gateway of India on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. this was a special year as this was the 150th Birth Centenary of the Mahatma. It was a memorable event full of Bhajans and Divine songs of all religions which were a personal favourite of Mahatma Gandhi. The splendid programme ended with the beautiful lightings of the Gateway of India providing a memorable scene to remember for years to come. |

Kolhapur Flood Relief Drive The NSS Unit had collected more than 200kg food grains, Biscuits, Clothes, books, stationary materials and other things of daily needs for the disastrous floods that took place in Kolhapur and Sangli. Mr. Shivam Dubey and Mr Pratik Patil also undertook the journey to Kolhapur to distribute the relief materials among the flood victims. |

Street Play at Ganeshotsav Mandals on Swacchha Bharat Abhiyaan Street Play at Ganeshotsav Mandals on Swacchha Bharat Abhiyaan the NSS Unit this year undertook an innovative step of spreading awareness regarding cleanliness through Mass education at Ganeshotsav Mandals during the Ganeshotsav festival. A team of 12 volunteers undertook the project. Street plays were performed at 8 Mandals and received felicitation and Cash gift for their social work. |

SEVA SAHAYOG ABHYASIKA PROJECT AUG and SEP 2019 The NSS Unit in cooperation with Seva Sahyog Foundation took up a project where volunteers had to complete 20 hrs in assisting the children from underprivileged backgrounds with there studies in a fun way. students went to different 'Abhyasikas' (Library) at Kanderpad, Ketkipada and Ambavadi etc. Volunteers not only helped the student with their studies, but also spent valuable time through singing, dancing and playing educational games. |

Cleanliness Drive’ at Sanjay GandhiNational Park Borivali 23rd July 2019 NSS has organized a ‘Cleanliness Drive’ at Sanjay Gandhi National Park Borivali on 23rd July 2019. More than 70 volunteers participated in the activity. The volunteers also attended a session on the topic, 'Environmental Justice' after the cleaning drive. |

Orientation session for the NSS Unit 11th July 2019 The Orientation of the students of the classes of F.Y.B.Com and F.Y.B.A. for understanding the National Service Scheme was held on 11th July 2019 in the Audio Visual Room. More than 100 students participated in the event. The Rules and Regulations of the NSS Unit were explained to them in details. A few students of S.Y.B.A. and T.Y.B.A. also expressed their thoughts and shared their experiences of the NSS. Ms. Pooja Ghadage, who was selected for the State Level Republic Day Parade also expressed her thoughts and experiences. Volunteers of the Second Year NSS performed a street play on the occasion. |

INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY 21st June 2019 The NSS Unit of Shailendra Degree College has started its academic year with a commitment to health and wellness by celebrating the 5th International Yoga Day on 21st June 2019. The 'Yoga Abhyas' was conducted by members of Shri Ambika Yoga Kutir in the Prin. D G Samant Hall. Around 48 students participated in the activity. The 'Common Yoga Protocol' was followed as per the direction of the government. The NSS Unit is grateful to all the teaching staff for their active participation. |

She also presented the NSS students with certificates for those volunteers who had participated in various workshops, competitions and camps at various intercollegiate and university level. We wish to conduct many activities for the students this year and are hopeful about the enthusiastic participation from them. |

21st June 2018: International Yoga Day The academic year began with a healthy start as the NSS Unit conducted its first activity by celebrating the 4th International Yoga Day in the college. A total of 62 students and 12 Staff members took part in the 'Yog Abhyas' under the guidance of teachers from the 'Ambika Yog Kutir'. The event was conducted in the Prin. D G Samant Hall. The practice had a rejuvenating effect on the participants. They realized the importance of regular Yoga practice for a healthy and active life. |

Camp was held at Belkhadi Village, Kaman Taluka from 11th to 17th October 2017 And World Aids Day awareness rally on 1st December 2017 The Special Residential Camp was held at Belkhadi Village, Kaman Taluka, Palghar district from 11th October 2017 to 17th October 2017. A total of 52 volunteers participated in the camp. Various activities like ‘Village Mapping’, ‘Vermicompost Plant’, ‘Swachhata Abhiyan’, and ‘Street Play’ regarding importance of cleanliness. The NSS Unit organized an awareness rally and performed street play at Dahisar Railway Station regarding World Aids Day on 1st December 2017. The rally helped in spreading the message of humane treatment of AIDS patients and how to involve them in the society in a healthy manner. |

‘Jagruk Mumbaikar’ Guest Lecture-24th August 2017 The NSS Unit of our college had organized a guest lecture with Mumbai Police Department in order to develop a sense of alertness and activeness towards safety and security of oneself and of the beloved city we live in. the lecture was held on 24th August 2017. It is with this intent that a team of Mumbai Police visited the college and gave a lecture on how to be alert in our public life. The team described in great detail about how to remain calm and avert crisis. The students also realized the importance and contribution of the police force in maintaining law and order in our city. The students were contended with the valuable insights they received. |

‘Democracy and Secularism’ Guest Lecture- 23rd August 2017 The NSS Unit and HPSA of our college had organized a guest lecture with Anubhav Mumbai in order to develop a sense of civil awareness and inculcation of political values among students. The lecture was held on 23rd August 2017. Ms. Swati Rane described in great detail about true awareness of political concepts and going beyond mere theoretical and conceptual understandings. The workshop’s importance lies in the fact that these students are on the verge of entering into its active role as citizens of our nation. The workshop will certainly help in making them better citizens in the near future. |

NSS Unit Blood Donation Camp 19th August 2017 The NSS Unit of Shailendra Degree College successfully conducted its annual Blood Donation Camp on Saturday, 19th August 2017. The Camp was conducted with the J J Mahanagar Blood Bank and Lions Club. It was a wonderful event which witnessed the involvement of the entire NSS team. The preparation had started around a week earlier, where awareness rallies were conducted in and around the college campus. Posters, Banners were made by students and were stuck all over the campus. The Chief Guest of the event was Dr. Vinaykumar M Rathod, Deputy Commissioner of Police of our Zone. His own participation in donating blood was a demonstration for students. His brief interaction with the students regarding approach towards life were words of encouragement and guidance to them. |

Swachha Bharat Pakhwada 1st August to 15th August 2017 The NSS Unit of our college celebrated the Swachhata Pakhwada which is held every year from 1st August to 15th August. There were various activities associated with the ‘Festival of Cleanliness’. Firstly on 1st August they took the oath of cleanliness. From 2nd to 5th August they participated in cleaning of the College campus. It included cleaning of classrooms, Auditorium, Ground and other surroundings. On 10th August the NSS Unit in collaboration with ECO-ROX and BMC R/North Ward established the E- Waste disposal system in the NSS Unit. Anyone can deposit their Electronic Waste which would be disposed of scientifically. The Unit further plans to establish a E-Waste Collection Centre at a larger community level. It was a wonderful fortnight and will be continued to be celebrated with vigor and enthusiasm. |

workshop regarding "Road Safety" The NSS volunteers of Shailendra Degree College participated in a workshop regarding "Road Safety" organised by the NGO "United Way” in the college. Students were made aware of road safety through PPT presentation regarding road safety measures and given assessment test by providing tablets to each student. They were also given practical on-field demonstration of bike parts and practical riding skills. Around 40 NSS volunteers took part in this activity. It certainly went a long way in making our students safe riders. |

NSS Room Inauguration 26th July 2017 The NSS Room was inaugurated on 26th July 2017 by Respected I/C Principal Dr. Swati Pitale. The Room was cleaned and decorated by NSS Volunteers using Posters and Charts. A new computer for NSS was also installed. Encouraging words of the Principal have brought in a new enthusiasm in the hearts and minds of the NSS Unit. It is ready to work with vigor and participate in a number of activities in this academic year. |

Van Mahotsav 5th July, 2017 The NSS Unit and Nature Club of Shailendra College jointly organized Tree Plantation in the college campus on 5th July 2017. The Highlight of the event was the valuable insight given by In-Charge Principal Dr. Swati Pitale. She emphasized on the responsibility to pass on a cleaner environment to future generations. She also appreciated the fact that our students not only planted trees annually but took enough post plantation care of them. Her speech was followed by staff and students participating in planting the saplings. The enthusiasm shown by volunteers and the efforts of the staff members made the event a grand success. The event spread the message of ‘Clean Shailendra, Green Shailendra’. |

Discussion on ‘Farmer’s Agitation: A Burning Issue’ 3rd July 2017 The HPSA and NSS Unit of our college had jointly organized an open forum discussion between students and teachers of SYBA and TYBA on the topic ‘Farmer’s Agitation: A Burning Issue’. The session was based on the recent events of agitations of farmers of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Students from both class enthusiastically participated in the event expressing their views. The forum provided an excellent opportunity for students to intellectually interact and they utilized it in the fullest possible extent. Principal Dr. Swati Pitale presented the concluding remarks. She gave her valuable insights on the root cause of the problem and what could be done to resolve the issue. The event helped in expanding awareness and sensitizing the students about the concerns and hardships of the vast farming community of India, thus fulfilling the purpose of enlightening our students and making them a better citizen. |

International Yoga Day 21st June 2017 The NSS Unit of Shailendra College had organized ‘Yoga Abhyas’ on account of International Yoga Day 2017 at the Principal D. G. Samant hall on 21st June 2017. The day is celebrated all over the world and is the symbol of rising importance of Yoga and its benefits for a healthy life. Members of ‘Shri Ambika Yog Kutir’ guided students and teachers in performing Pranayam and Yog asanas. The emphasis was on benefits of Yoga Practice for enhancing concentration of students and improving not just their physical but also mental and emotional fitness. It has definitely helped in generating awareness among the students and takes a step towards good health and well being. |

NSS Camping activity 2016-17 The NSS unit of our college organized a special residential camp from 29th November , 2016 to 5th December, 2016. This 07 days residential camp was conducted at Village Belkadi, Post - Kaman, Tal - Vasai, Dist. - Thane. A total of 52 N.S.S. volunteers accompanied by 2 N.S.S. International Yoga Day, 21st June 2016 NSS unit organized International Yoga Day on 21st June 2016. Mrs. Sujata Gopalan, Mrs. Neha Desai and Ms. Lina Waingaokar from Ambika Yoga Kutir, LIC Branch, Borivli (W) conducted a Yoga Session in the college. Environment conservation activities:
Tree plantation:
The NSS unit of the college took efforts to promote conservation of environment by organising tree plantation activity in the adopted village of Belkadi. 45 different varieties of saplings were procured and planted. The school children from the adopted village were involved in the activity to ensure that planted saplings are taken care of by these students. Volunteers realised the close relationship between the sustenance of environment and survival of human race and resolved that they will do everything possible to protect the environment. |
